Gender equality and women empowerment are key pillars to sustainable economic growth and industrial development in Africa, which are drivers of poverty reduction and social integration.

In this context, 2023 theme for Women’s international Day, DigitaLL: Innovation and technology gender equality reminds us all the importance of inclusive innovation, technology and digital literacy. Indeed, in Sub-Saharan Africa, only 24% women use the Internet, against 35 % of men (check what’s digital literacy?).

Moreover, the fourth industrial revolution puts women at more risk than men as they will lose 5 jobs for every one gained through Industry 4.0, while men will only lose 3 (check How Industry 4.0 impacts women?). With the increased use of smart products and AI, tomorrow’s labour force has to develop new skillsets (check How Industry 4.0 impacts jobs?) through education and vocational training.

This digital revolution also impacts agriculture and agribusiness sectors through smart agriculture to increase productivity and resource efficiency at all levels of the value chains, from farming to transformation, marketing and export.

Therefore, OYA encourages young female entrepreneurs’ development and use of innovative solutions and digital tools in their business models, services, and products. OYA also uses innovative digital solutions to facilitate access to online markets and funding tools (crowdfunding training ).

Furthermore, OYA ensures that women are key actors at all levels of its activities: they represent half of the guests interviewed on OYA Entrepreneurial Mindset Podcast, more than half of our meso-level partners are women-led and more than 40% of OYA entrepreneurs in 2022 were women.
