Empowering young agripreneurs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

21 April 2023, Kinshasa - Africa has the world’s youngest population, with more than 600 million people under the age of 24 and more than 750 million under the age of 35. Given the right opportunities, youth could drive inclusive economic growth across the continent.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have forged the Opportunities for Youth in Africa (OYA) programme to facilitate and accelerate efforts to create jobs for young Africans, in particular, by supporting the development of agribusinesses and fostering agricultural entrepreneurship including through leveraging public and private investment in agriculture.

With 67 percent of the Congolese population being young people whose access to employment is minimal, the programme’s objective in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is to boost the agricultural and agro-industrial sector, fostering sustainability, equitable and inclusive growth. Therefore, reviewing the agricultural and agro-industrial models is critical.

A taskforce for youth in agribusiness

On 17 and 18 April 2023, the OYA-DRC Focal Points Workshop gathered over thirty representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Fisheries and Livestock, with civil society organizations, the private sector, and national and international agencies. The objective was to establish a permanent Task Force of OYA-DRC focal points who would function as a network of sectorial structures and ministries involved in the development of agriculture, agro-industry, and agribusiness.

During the two-day event, focal points were brought up to date on the latest developments in the project. They were presented with the technical innovations promoted throughout the programme, notably incubator and accelerator activities that will assist the young agripreneurs in their journey. Participants also highlighted the growing role of e-agriculture in providing modern and more effective techniques. They commented positively on the inclusion of these practices in the training modules.

“I am glad to see that the project has considered the digitalization and mechanization of agriculture, two areas of greater interest to young people,” said Baguma Okenge Olivier, Focal Point and Head of Division at the National Service of Agricultural Mechanisation at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Focal Points Task Force, co-coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture Focal Point and the OYA-DRC Project Focal Point, was established during the event and will be responsible for determining the guidelines for the implementation of the OYA project, facilitating the joint mobilization of funds for the development of agriculture, agro-industry and agribusiness, and ensuring the empowerment and promotion of decent jobs for youth.

Finally, with training activities starting in the second half of May, the OYA-DRC focal points worked on defining the criteria to select the young agripreneurs who will benefit from the trainings organized in the incubators and accelerators.

Renforcement des capacités des jeunes agripreneurs en République démocratique du Congo à travers le programme OYA.

21 avril 2023, Kinshasa – L’Afrique a la population la plus jeunes du monde, avec plus de 600 millions de personnes âgées de moins de 24 ans et plus de 750 millions de personnes âgées de moins de 35 ans. S’ils bénéficient des bonnes opportunités, les jeunes pourraient être le moteur d’une croissance économique inclusive sur l’ensemble du continent.

L’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) et l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour le développement industriel (ONUDI) ont créé le programme « Opportunités pour les jeunes en Afrique (OYA) » afin de faciliter et d’accélérer les efforts de création d’emplois pour les jeunes Africains, en particulier en soutenant le développement des agro-industries et en encourageant l’entreprenariat agricole, notamment en tirant parti des investissements publics et privés dans l’agriculture.

Avec 67 % de la population congolaise composée de jeunes dont l’accès à l’emploi est minime, l’objectif du programme en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) est de stimuler le secteur agricole et agro-industriel, en favorisant une croissance durable, équitable et inclusive. Il est donc essentiel de revoir les modèles agricoles et agro-industriels.

Une task-force pour les jeunes dans l’agro-industrie

Les 17 et 18 avril 2023, l’Atelier des points focaux de l’OYA-RDC a réuni plus de trente représentants des ministères de l’agriculture, de l’industrie, de la pêche et de l’élevage, ainsi que des organisations de la société civile, du secteur privé et des agences nationales et internationales. L’objectif était d’établir une Task-Force permanente de points focaux de l’OYA-RDC qui fonctionnerait comme un réseau de structures sectorielles et de ministères impliqués dans le développement de l’agriculture, de l’agro-industrie et de l’agrobusiness.

Au cours de ces deux jours, les points focaux ont été informés des derniers développements du projet. Ils ont pris connaissance des innovations techniques promues tout au long du programme, notamment les activités d’incubation et d’accélération qui aideront les jeunes agripreneurs dans leur parcours. Les participants ont également souligné le rôle croissant de l’e-agriculture dans l’apport de techniques modernes et plus efficaces. De nombreux commentaires positifs sur l’inclusion de ces pratiques dans les modules de formation ont été fait.

” Je suis heureux de voir que le projet a pris en compte la numérisation et la mécanisation de l’agriculture, deux domaines qui intéressent davantage les jeunes “, a déclaré Baguma Okenge Olivier, Point focal et Chef de division au Service national de la mécanisation agricole au Ministère de l’Agriculture.

La Task-Force des Points Focaux, coordonnée par le Point focal du Ministère de l’Agriculture et celui du Projet OYA-RDC, a été mise en place au cours de l’événement et sera chargée de déterminer les lignes directrices pour la mise en œuvre du projet OYA, de faciliter la mobilisation conjointe des fonds pour le développement de l’agriculture, de l’agro-industrie et de l’agribusiness, et d’assurer l’autonomisation et la promotion d’emplois décents pour les jeunes.

Enfin, les activités de formation débutant dans la seconde moitié du mois de mai, les points focaux de l’OYA-RDC ont travaillé à la définition des critères de sélection des jeunes agripreneurs qui bénéficieront des formations organisées dans les incubateurs et les accélérateurs.
